  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

The Bronx is the land route between Manhattan, Queens, and Westchester. Expressways cross the borough, and neighborhood streets use New York City’s default speed limit. None of that creates a Bronx-only insurance reduction.

NYC 311 lists 25 mph as the citywide limit for motorists unless another speed is posted. The Cross Bronx Expressway and the Major Deegan are posted highways. Points from tickets on those roads count on the same 24-month, 11-point suspension scale DMV uses everywhere in the state.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Cross Bronx Expressway. I-95 crosses the borough. A course completion does not change how a Cross Bronx speeding conviction is listed. The conviction stays. DMV may ignore up to 4 of the points when it decides whether to suspend you.
  • Major Deegan Expressway. I-87 runs between the bridges to Manhattan and the Yonkers line. Continuing into Westchester does not switch you to a different point law.
  • Bronx River Parkway and the Bruckner Expressway. The Bronx River Parkway continues north into Westchester. The Bruckner ties I-95 toward the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges. Posted limits on these roads override the street default.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for The Bronx. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

A lot of Bronx households insure a car that is driven both in the city and in Westchester. The garaging ZIP code does not replace the principal-operator rule. Only that operator receives the 10% reduction in the base rate.

TLC’s defensive driving requirement still applies if you hold a TLC license, including licenses used for trips that start in the Bronx. TLC’s proof rules and point rules are on TLC’s website, separate from the DMV PIRP page.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for The Bronx

My ticket was on the Cross Bronx. Will this course delete it?

No. DMV says the tickets and points do not physically come off your driving record. Most violations keep showing for up to four years. Drug or alcohol convictions stay for 10 or 15 years, depending on the violation. Point reduction only changes the total DMV uses for a suspension calculation.

We have two drivers and one Bronx garage. Do we both get 10%?

DMV says that if more than one named insured completes the course, only the principal operator can receive the 10% reduction. Ask the insurer who the principal operator is on your policy before you assume both completions will change the bill.
