New Jersey 6-hour defensive driving course

This is a voluntary New Jersey course. It is not the New York Point and Insurance Reduction Program, and it is not a 10% New York discount. New Jersey’s insurance reduction is set by your insurer, not by a fixed percentage on this site.

How the New Jersey course works

  1. 1 Enroll only if it is the voluntary course MVC says this is not a substitute for the Probationary Driver Program or the Driver Improvement Program.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course American Safety Institute offers it online. MVC lists American Safety Institute, Inc. as an approved online provider.
  3. 3 MVC is notified for you The provider tells MVC within 7 to 10 business days. Ask your insurer about the premium reduction. It is not New York’s 10%.

The NJ MVC says a defensive driving course is not a substitute for the Probationary Driver Program. It is also not the Driver Improvement Program that some drivers are offered instead of a suspension. If you received one of those notices, follow the notice.

Points

MVC’s driver programs page says two points may be removed from the points you currently have. The credit is only for a state-approved New Jersey defensive driving curriculum. You may receive that two-point reduction once every five years, and only if points are on your record when you finish. MVC says to check with the provider before you register.

The provider, not you, notifies MVC. MVC says that notice should arrive within 7 to 10 business days and that a certificate from the license holder is not acceptable for the point credit.

Insurance

MVC says you may qualify for an insurance rate reduction and tells you to contact your agent. The statute, N.J.S.A. 17:33B-45.1, requires private-passenger auto rate filings to include an appropriate reduction for personal injury protection, bodily injury liability, property damage, and physical damage after an approved defensive driving course. The amount is whatever the insurer’s actuarial experience justifies. It is not a number this site can promise.

The reduction is available for three years, beginning with the next policy period after you finish, or until your license is suspended or you accumulate four or more motor vehicle points, whichever comes first. It is for the named insured, or for the principal operator if that person is not the named insured. The Department of Banking and Insurance also says New Jersey law requires insurers to offer a discount for an MVC-approved defensive driving course.

The provider

MVC’s list of approved online defensive driving courses includes American Safety Institute, Inc., with the website americansafetyinstitute.com. ASI describes this product as a 6-hour online course and says it does not meet the requirements of the driver improvement or probationary driver programs.

ASI’s New Jersey course page lists a fee of $19.95. Confirm the total at checkout. ASI’s help center says New Jersey completions are sent electronically to MVC and that you still give proof to your insurance company.

Questions about the New Jersey course

Is the New Jersey course the New York 10% course?

No. New York’s 10% base-rate reduction is a New York PIRP rule. New Jersey law requires insurers to include an appropriate premium reduction for an MVC-approved defensive driving course, in an amount justified by the insurer’s own actuarial experience. This site does not state a New Jersey percentage because the statute does not fix one.

How many New Jersey points can come off?

MVC says two points may be removed from the points you currently have, only for a state-approved New Jersey defensive driving curriculum. You can receive that two-point reduction only once every five years, and only if you have points on your record when you finish. MVC tells you to check with the provider before you register.

Is this the class I was assigned after too many points?

No. MVC says a defensive driving course is voluntary. It is not a substitute for the Probationary Driver Program, and it is not the Driver Improvement Program offered in place of a suspension. If you received a notice for either remedial program, follow that notice.

How does MVC know I finished, and how do I ask for the insurance reduction?

MVC says the provider notifies MVC within 7 to 10 business days and that a certificate from the license holder is not acceptable for that point credit. American Safety Institute says it sends New Jersey completions to MVC electronically and also gives you a printable proof of completion. For insurance, the named insured or principal operator should ask the insurer. The reduction, when it applies, runs for three years starting with the next policy period, and it ends sooner if your license is suspended or you accumulate four or more motor vehicle points.
