How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

What the 10% is

New York’s Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is also called the defensive driving course or the motor vehicle crash prevention course. The internet version is the Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program (I-PIRP). DMV says an I-PIRP completion carries the same benefits as the classroom course.

The DMV advertising rule for this course allows one description of the insurance benefit: a 10% reduction, for three years, in the base rate of the motorist’s current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums. Any statement has to say that you must be the principal operator of the insured vehicle. The PIRP page also says the course reduces the base rate of auto and motorcycle premiums by 10% each year for three years.

The 10% does not stop a general premium increase, or an increase caused by a violation or a crash. Taking the course more often than once every three years does not improve on that 10%. To keep the reduction, DMV says you take the course once every 36 months.

What “up to 4 points” means

Completing the course does not erase a violation, a conviction, or the points on your driving record. Most violations keep showing for up to four years. Drug or alcohol convictions stay for 10 or 15 years, depending on the violation.

If you collect 11 points in 24 months, DMV may suspend your license. For that calculation, 4 points are subtracted when you have 11 or more. DMV then reduces the active points by up to 4 after the sponsor reports your completion. The reduction applies only to violations in the 18 months before you finish, it cannot drop the total below zero, and you can use it only once in an 18-month period even if you do not need the points.

It does not affect points your insurance company assigns. It does not stop a mandatory suspension or revocation, including DWI, DWAI, or three speeding convictions within 18 months. It does not change a suspension that has already started, and it does not prevent or reduce a driver responsibility assessment, which DMV requires when you have 6 or more points in 18 months.

Who teaches it

DMV’s list of internet PIRP sponsors includes American Safety, 111 Washington Avenue, Suite 606, Albany, NY 12210, 1-800-800-7121. DMV lists that sponsor’s identity checks as keystroke analysis and personal and content questions. American Safety Institute publishes this course and lists the fee as $23.95 plus a DMV fee. The checkout page is where the amount due is shown. Other approved sponsors are on the DMV list. DMV says fees vary and that it pays to compare them.

American Safety’s course is approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for point and insurance reduction. This site is not the sponsor and not the DMV.

American Safety Institute says its New York course runs on a computer, phone, or tablet. DMV says an internet course needs a computer and an acceptable connection, and that you can stop and continue within 30 days of registration.

Common questions

Does the 6-hour course take points off my driving record?

No. DMV says completing a PIRP course does not remove a violation, conviction, or the points from your driving record. Point reduction means DMV subtracts 4 points when it calculates a suspension if you have 11 or more points. The tickets stay on the record. After the sponsor reports your completion, DMV reduces the active points used in that calculation by up to 4 points, and the total cannot go below zero.

What is the 10% insurance reduction?

Successful completion provides a 10% reduction, for three years, in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums. You must be the principal operator of the insured vehicle. DMV’s PIRP page also says the course reduces the base rate of auto and motorcycle insurance premiums by 10% each year for three years. It does not stop other premium increases, including increases from violations or crashes, and it is not a quote of dollars saved.

How often can I take it?

For point reduction, once in an 18-month period, even if you do not use the point benefit. For the insurance reduction, DMV says you must take the course once every 36 months to keep the benefit. Taking it more often than once every three years does not improve on the 10% reduction.

Is this the 5-hour course for a new license?

No. The 5-hour pre-licensing course is for many first-time drivers before a road test. It does not provide the point or insurance reduction. The 6-hour course is the Point and Insurance Reduction Program.

Is NY 10 Percent Off the DMV or the school?

No. This is an independent affiliate site. The New York DMV lists American Safety as an internet PIRP sponsor. American Safety Institute sells the course. Enroll links go directly to that provider’s checkout.
