The 6-hour New York course for Brooklyn drivers

A 10% base-rate reduction for three years if you are the principal operator, and up to 4 points on DMV’s suspension calculation. Tickets stay on the record.

This is the statewide American Safety Institute checkout. There is no separate Brooklyn link or price on this site.

  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Brooklyn mixes parkway driving, expressway approaches, and dense neighborhood streets. A course that reduces a New York insurance base rate does not change because you took it in Bay Ridge, Bushwick, or Midwood. The DMV rule is statewide.

On city streets, NYC 311’s speed-limit page sets a 25 mph default for motorists unless another limit is posted. The BQE and the Belt Parkway carry their own posted limits. Points from a Brooklyn conviction are New York DMV points, calculated the same way as points from a conviction upstate.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. I-278 cuts through the borough and connects toward the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Queens. Congestion on the BQE is a driving problem. It is not a separate point system.
  • Belt Parkway and the Prospect Expressway. These limited-access roads move cars around the southern and central parts of the borough. Posted speeds there are not the neighborhood default.
  • East River bridges. The Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges tie Brooklyn to Manhattan. Crossing them does not split your New York driving record in two.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Brooklyn. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

For-hire drivers who live in Brooklyn and work under a TLC license still have to meet TLC’s defensive driving schedule. TLC’s point credit for its own licensing program is not the DMV’s “up to 4 points” suspension calculation. Keep those two uses of a defensive driving course separate, and read the certificate rules on TLC’s site.

A car garaged on a Brooklyn street is still a New York policy for this purpose. Only the principal operator receives the 10% base-rate reduction, even if another person on the policy also finishes a PIRP course.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Brooklyn

Are Brooklyn points different from points in the rest of the state?

No. DMV uses one point system. Eleven points in 24 months can lead to a suspension. A PIRP course subtracts 4 points from the suspension calculation if you are at 11 or more. It does not erase the Brooklyn ticket from the record that an insurer can see.

I drive the BQE every day. Does that change how long the course is?

No. The course is advertised as 6 hours and, on DMV’s internet-course page, includes 320 minutes of instruction. You can pause it and you must finish within 30 days of registration. Where you commute does not change that clock.
