  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Buffalo driving is shaped by lake-effect snow off Lake Erie, short sight lines in a storm, and highways that also lead to the Canadian border. The legal effect of the 6-hour course is not local weather policy. It is the same DMV point and insurance reduction used on Long Island.

A winter refresher can still be a reason to take a defensive driving course. The benefit DMV will actually record is narrower than “points gone”: up to 4 points come off the suspension math, the conviction stays, and the insurance reduction is 10% of the base rate for the principal operator for three years.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-190 and the Kensington Expressway. I-190 runs along the Niagara River and the waterfront. The Kensington (NY 33) is a main route east from downtown. Tickets on either road use the statewide point values.
  • I-90, the New York State Thruway. The Thruway passes south of the city and is the long-distance route toward Rochester and Albany. A Thruway conviction is still a New York conviction.
  • Peace Bridge. The bridge crosses to Fort Erie, Ontario. This course reports to the New York DMV. It is not a Canadian course, and it does not change tolls or border rules.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Buffalo. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

DMV’s approved-sponsor list includes providers people in Erie County can take from home. American Safety is the internet sponsor this site links to, at the Albany address DMV publishes. You do not have to be in Albany to take the internet course. You do need a New York client ID if you want the completion applied to a New York license record.

Snowbelt driving does not extend the 30-day completion window. DMV requires the internet course to be finished within 30 days of registration, in as many sittings as you need.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Buffalo

Does lake-effect snow give Buffalo drivers a larger insurance reduction?

No. DMV describes a 10% reduction in the base rate, not a higher percentage for a colder county. Claims that the reduction may be less or more than 10% a year are not the statement DMV’s advertising rule allows.

I cross the Peace Bridge for work. Will this course affect an Ontario license?

This course is for a New York DMV record and a New York insurance reduction. It does not change another country’s license. If you do not have a New York client ID, DMV says an internet completion cannot be applied to your New York license record.
