  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Columbia County faces the Hudson River at the city of Hudson and spreads east to the Taconic State Parkway. Germantown, Kinderhook, Chatham, and Hillsdale are different drives: a river road, a village main street, or a parkway. All of them feed one New York driving record.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Taconic State Parkway. The north–south parkway on the east side of the county. It is a posted road.
  • Route 9 and Route 9H. They carry local traffic through Hudson and the northern towns toward Rensselaer County.
  • Route 23. It crosses from the Taconic toward the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Bridge traffic does not change the 30-day course clock.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Columbia County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

The Rip Van Winkle Bridge ties the county to Catskill in Greene County. A household that garages the car in Hudson and works in Albany is still dealing with the principal operator, not with a Columbia County percentage. Only that operator receives the 10% when more than one person on the policy finishes the course.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Columbia County

Is Hudson’s insurance discount different because it is a small city?

No. DMV’s 10% reduction is in the base rate, for three years, for the principal operator. It does not depend on city size, and it does not stop other premium increases.

Does Columbia County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
