This is the statewide American Safety Institute checkout. There is no separate Essex County link or price on this site.

  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Essex County is Adirondack driving: Elizabethtown is the county seat, and Lake Placid, Keene, and Schroon Lake draw seasonal traffic off I-87. A two-lane road over a mountain pass and a Northway exit are different skills. They are the same statute. The internet course still has to be finished within 30 days of registration.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-87. The Northway is the fast way through the eastern side of the county. It is posted.
  • Route 73. It connects the Northway toward Keene and Lake Placid. Mountain-road tickets are New York tickets.
  • Route 86. A route through the High Peaks towns. Winter conditions do not add points by themselves. Convictions do.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Essex County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Seasonal residents should be careful about the principal operator. A car that is insured and garaged in Essex County follows the same 10% base-rate rule as a car in Albany. If you are not the principal operator, DMV’s rule says you are not the person who receives the reduction.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Essex County

Does Lake Placid tourist traffic create a local point credit?

No. You can use a PIRP course for point reduction once in an 18-month period, statewide. Tourist season does not add a second credit.

Does Essex County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
