  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Herkimer County follows the Mohawk River through Herkimer, Ilion, and Little Falls, then climbs north toward Old Forge. I-90 and Route 5 serve the valley. Route 28 serves the Adirondack towns. A valley ticket and a Route 28 ticket add together on one record.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-90. The Thruway crosses the Mohawk Valley here. Thruway convictions stay on the record.
  • Route 5. The older valley road through Herkimer, Mohawk, and Ilion.
  • Route 28. It leaves the valley toward Middleville and Old Forge. Seasonal traffic does not change the statute.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Herkimer County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Little Falls and Ilion are close enough that people do not think of them as different legal territories. They are not. The insurance reduction is still 10% of the base rate for the principal operator, for three years, and it does not stack if you take the course early.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Herkimer County

I live in Ilion and got a ticket on the Thruway. Does the town matter?

The town matters for where you were driving, not for the point math. DMV uses the violation date and the statewide schedule. The course can subtract up to 4 points from a suspension calculation if you have 11 or more.

Does Herkimer County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
