The 6-hour New York course for Montgomery County drivers

A 10% base-rate reduction for three years if you are the principal operator, and up to 4 points on DMV’s suspension calculation. Tickets stay on the record.

This is the statewide American Safety Institute checkout. There is no separate Montgomery County link or price on this site.

  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Montgomery County follows the Mohawk through Amsterdam, Fonda, and St. Johnsville. I-90 is the through road, and Route 5 is the older valley road. A westbound commute toward Utica or an eastbound commute toward Schenectady does not create a Montgomery County discount.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-90. The Thruway follows the river through the county. Thruway tickets use the statewide schedule.
  • Route 5. The valley road through Amsterdam and the smaller river towns.
  • Route 30. It crosses the river at Amsterdam and runs north toward Fulton County.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Montgomery County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Amsterdam is the largest city. Fonda and Fultonville face each other across the river. A ticket on either bank is the same New York record. The course cannot erase it.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Montgomery County

Does Amsterdam have a separate point reduction from the rest of the county?

No. Up to 4 points can come off DMV’s suspension calculation, statewide, and the conviction stays on the record in every Montgomery County town.

Does Montgomery County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
