  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Nassau County is the western half of Long Island, between Queens and Suffolk. Parkways and the Long Island Expressway carry a lot of the daily driving. The Point and Insurance Reduction Program does not have a Long Island rate. The 10% figure is the statewide reduction in the insurance base rate.

A car garaged in Hempstead, Great Neck, Garden City, or Long Beach follows the same principal-operator rule. If you are not the principal operator of the insured vehicle, DMV’s advertising rule says you are not eligible for the reduction, even if you live at the same address.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Long Island Expressway. I-495 crosses Nassau between the Queens line and Suffolk. Tickets on the LIE are ordinary New York convictions. They stay on the record after you finish the course.
  • Northern State and Southern State Parkways. These parkways run the length of the county. They are posted roads. The course does not set or change their speed limits.
  • Meadowbrook and Wantagh Parkways. The Meadowbrook and Wantagh run north–south toward the south shore. They are part of the same state driving record as a local street in Mineola.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Nassau County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Nassau policies are often written for a suburban garage and a commute into Queens or Manhattan. The insurer still decides who the principal operator is. DMV says only that person receives the 10% when more than one named person finishes the course.

Suffolk County is the other half of Long Island and uses the same PIRP rules. The roads change east of the county line. The certificate, the 30-day finish window, and the 18-month point-reduction limit do not.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Nassau County

Is there a Nassau County defensive driving discount on top of the state 10%?

Not in DMV’s rules. The insurance benefit DMV describes is a 10% reduction in the base rate for three years. County government does not add a second PIRP percentage. Repeating the course sooner than every three years does not raise the 10%.

Where do I take the certificate?

To your insurance company, on paper. DMV says the sponsor mails the certificate by regular mail within 14 business days and that an email copy is not acceptable to the insurer. Within 90 days, the liability and collision reduction is retroactive to the completion date.
