The 6-hour New York course for Queens drivers

A 10% base-rate reduction for three years if you are the principal operator, and up to 4 points on DMV’s suspension calculation. Tickets stay on the record.

This is the statewide American Safety Institute checkout. There is no separate Queens link or price on this site.

  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Queens is where city streets, two airports, and the highways to Long Island meet. The 6-hour course does not have a Queens version. DMV’s point and insurance reduction is one statewide program, whether the car is garaged in Flushing, Jamaica, or the Rockaways.

NYC 311 states a 25 mph default for motorists on city streets unless a limit is posted. The Grand Central Parkway, the Van Wyck, and the Long Island Expressway are posted roads. A speeding conviction on any of them can add New York points. The course does not remove that conviction.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Long Island Expressway. I-495 runs from the Queens-Midtown Tunnel across Queens into Nassau and Suffolk. A daily LIE trip does not create a second insurance discount. The 10% is once, on the base rate, for the principal operator, for three years.
  • Grand Central Parkway and the Van Wyck. Grand Central is the main highway toward LaGuardia. The Van Wyck (I-678) is the main highway toward JFK. Airport traffic is a reason people want a refresher. It does not change the PIRP statute.
  • Cross Island Parkway. The Cross Island runs along the Nassau County line. Crossing into Nassau does not move your record to a different DMV system.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Queens. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Eastern Queens driving can feel closer to a Nassau parkway than to Midtown. The certificate rules do not follow that feeling. The sponsor mails a paper certificate. DMV says an email copy will not be accepted by your insurer. Present it within 90 days if you want the liability and collision reduction dated back to the day you finished.

TLC licensees who live in Queens follow TLC’s own three-year defensive driving cycle and TLC’s own point rules. Do not treat TLC’s point credit as the DMV reduction of up to 4 points.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Queens

I garage the car in Queens and work in Nassau. Which course do I need?

For a New York license and a New York auto policy, the relevant insurance and point course is the New York PIRP course. The principal operator of the insured vehicle is the person eligible for the 10% base-rate reduction. Nassau does not have a separate percentage.

Does the course cover airport-road driving as its own module?

DMV requires crash-prevention courses to cover defensive driving, driver behavior, and New York traffic law. This site does not claim a special airport chapter. American Safety Institute describes its own lesson list on its course page.
