  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Rochester’s freeway system loops around the city on I-490, with I-390 to the south and I-590 to the east, and the Thruway farther south. Winter roads here are influenced by Lake Ontario. That geography does not create a Monroe County version of the insurance reduction.

The same sentence DMV uses for every county applies here. Successful completion provides a 10% reduction, for three years, in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Point reduction is a suspension calculation, not a wiped record.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-490. I-490 carries traffic through the Rochester area, including the Inner Loop connections downtown. A conviction on I-490 stays on the driving record after the course.
  • I-390 and I-590. I-390 runs south toward the Thruway and the Finger Lakes. I-590 runs along the east side. Both are New York highways on a New York abstract.
  • New York State Thruway. I-90 south of the city is the same Thruway Buffalo and Albany drivers use. The sponsor still has 10 weeks to notify DMV, and you still send the paper certificate to the insurer yourself.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Rochester. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Rochester and Buffalo share hard winters and the same statute. Nothing in the PIRP rules pays extra because a storm came off Lake Ontario instead of Lake Erie. Compare course fees on DMV’s sponsor list if you want to. DMV says fees vary and are stated before you register.

If you are getting a first New York license rather than reducing points, you want the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one. The 5-hour course does not provide the 10% reduction.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Rochester

Is the Rochester course different from the Buffalo course?

On this site, no. Both pages use the same statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. The local pages explain the roads. They do not change the curriculum, the fee, or the DMV benefit.

Can I count this course against a future ticket if I have a clean record today?

No. DMV says the reduction cannot be used as credit against future violations, and it applies only to points from violations in the 18 months before you finish. You may still want the insurance reduction on its own. That benefit is kept by taking the course once every 36 months, not by taking it early to store points.
