  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Schenectady County is small and almost filled by the city and the towns of Rotterdam, Niskayuna, and Glenville. I-890 and I-90 move cars toward Albany and Amsterdam. A Niskayuna garage and a state job in Albany are a common pair, and they still produce one New York record.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-890. The freeway through Rotterdam and Schenectady toward Albany. It is posted.
  • I-90. The Thruway crosses the county. Tickets on it stay on the record.
  • Route 5 and Route 7. Surface roads through the city and Niskayuna. Local convictions are not erased by the course.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Schenectady County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

The city page covers Schenectady’s streets. This county page covers the towns around them. The enroll link does not change. DMV lists American Safety in Albany, and you take the internet course from home in either place.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.
