  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

St. Lawrence County is large. Canton and Potsdam are the college towns, Ogdensburg is the river city, and Massena is farther east. US 11 ties them together. A drive across this county can take longer than a drive across Nassau County, and the point schedule is still the same.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • US 11. The main road through Canton, Potsdam, and toward Malone and Watertown.
  • Route 37. It follows the St. Lawrence through Ogdensburg and Massena. Border crossings are not what this course files.
  • Route 56. A route from Potsdam toward the Adirondacks. It is posted.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for St. Lawrence County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

St. Lawrence University and SUNY Potsdam add student drivers. Clarkson is in Potsdam too. A student with a New York photo permit who needs a first license looks at the 5-hour course. A licensed driver who wants the insurance reduction looks at the 6-hour course. They are not interchangeable.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for St. Lawrence County

The county is huge. Does the 30-day limit start when I reach an office?

No. DMV starts the 30 days when you register for the internet course, not when you visit an office. The course is finished online.

Does St. Lawrence County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
