  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Suffolk County runs from the Nassau line to the forks. Summer traffic toward the East End and ordinary commuting on Sunrise Highway are different kinds of driving. They share one set of DMV point and insurance rules.

The Long Island Expressway reaches Riverhead. East of there, Sunrise Highway (NY 27) and local roads carry more of the trips. A conviction on any of them can add points. Finishing the 6-hour course does not take the conviction off the abstract an insurer reads.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Long Island Expressway to Riverhead. I-495 ends at Riverhead. A ticket on that stretch is a New York ticket. Point reduction looks back 18 months and cannot be saved up against a future ticket.
  • Sunrise Highway. NY 27 is a main east–west road through southern Suffolk. It is not a separate insurance region. The principal operator rule still decides who gets the 10% base-rate reduction.
  • Sagtikos and Robert Moses. The Sagtikos State Parkway and the Robert Moses Causeway connect the main island to park and beach trips. Seasonal volume does not change the 30 days you have to finish an internet PIRP course after you register.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Suffolk County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Drivers who garage a car in Brookhaven, Islip, Huntington, or the East End use the same checkout as drivers in Nassau. This site does not offer a Suffolk price. American Safety Institute publishes its course fee on its own page, and the checkout page shows the amount due.

If you also drive in New York City for work and hold a TLC license, TLC’s defensive driving cycle is an additional requirement. It is described on TLC’s site, not as a Suffolk rule.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Suffolk County

Does the East End have a different point reduction because of summer traffic?

No. DMV subtracts 4 points for a suspension calculation if you have 11 or more points in the statewide system. You can use a PIRP course for point reduction only once in 18 months. Where the summer traffic sits does not add a local point credit.

I live in Suffolk and the policy is in my spouse’s name. Who should take the course?

DMV requires the person who wants the insurance reduction to be the principal operator of the insured vehicle. Ask the insurer who that is on your policy. A completion by someone else on the policy does not transfer the 10%.
