  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Westchester sits between the Bronx and the Hudson Valley. Parkways run north–south, and I-287 crosses the county. A large number of policies garage the car in Westchester while the driving day continues into New York City. The PIRP benefit follows the policy and the principal operator, not the county line you cross on the way to work.

A speeding ticket on a Westchester parkway and a speeding ticket in the Bronx both feed the same New York point total. Eleven points in 24 months can trigger a DMV suspension. The course can change that calculation by 4 points. It cannot stop a suspension that has already started.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Hutchinson River, Bronx River, and Saw Mill River Parkways. These parkways are the daily north–south roads for much of the county. They are posted. The course is not a substitute for the posted limit.
  • Sprain Brook Parkway and the Taconic. The Sprain connects toward the Bronx River Parkway. The Taconic continues north. Both are New York roads on a New York record.
  • I-287 and I-95. The Cross Westchester Expressway and the New England Thruway tie the county to the wider interstate system. An out-of-state trip is not what this course reports. The sponsor reports a New York PIRP completion to the New York DMV.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Westchester County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

Commuter households should sort out the principal operator before they enroll two people. DMV is explicit: only the principal operator receives the 10% reduction when more than one person named on the policy completes the course.

Westchester is outside the five boroughs, so the city’s 25 mph default does not apply here. TLC’s defensive driving requirement still matters if someone in the household holds a TLC license for work in the city.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Westchester County

I commute from Westchester to Manhattan. Does the city speed limit change my point total?

The speed limit changes at the signs. The point system does not. Points are assigned under the New York schedule after a conviction, based on the violation date. The PIRP reduction applies only to points from violations in the 18 months before you finish the course.

Will my insurer see the Westchester ticket after I finish?

Yes. DMV says the points do not physically come off the record, and insurance company point systems are separate from DMV’s. Give the paper certificate to the insurer for the premium reduction. Do not expect the course to delete the violation from the abstract.
