A New York PIRP course removes up to 4 points from the suspension math

Completing a PIRP course does not remove a violation, a conviction, or the points from your driving record. DMV says 4 points are subtracted when it calculates a suspension if you have 11 or more points. After the sponsor reports completion, DMV reduces the active points used in that calculation by up to 4. The total cannot go below zero.

  • Only points from violations in the 18 months before you finish are eligible.
  • You can use the point reduction once in an 18-month period, even if you do not use the benefit.
  • Eleven points in 24 months can lead to a suspension. That 24-month window is not the same as the 18-month lookback.
  • Your insurer’s point system is separate.
  • The course does not stop a mandatory suspension or revocation, and it does not reduce a driver responsibility assessment.

Questions

Will the points disappear from my record?

No. DMV says the tickets and points do not physically come off your driving record. Most violations keep showing for up to four years.

Can I use the course to dismiss a ticket?

No. The course does not plead a ticket or remove the conviction.
