New York point reduction is once every 18 months

There are two clocks. For point reduction, DMV says you can use a PIRP course once in an 18-month period, even if you do not use the point benefit. For the insurance reduction, you must take the course once every 36 months to keep it. The advertising regulation does not allow a claim that repeating the course more often than once every three years improves on the 10% reduction.

  • Point clock: once every 18 months, and only for violations in the 18 months before you finish.
  • Insurance clock: once every 36 months to maintain the 10% base-rate reduction.
  • The reduction cannot be saved as credit against future tickets.

Questions

If I take it every year, do I get a bigger discount?

No. Taking it more often than once every three years does not raise the 10% insurance reduction.

Does the 18-month rule also reset my insurance discount?

No. Eighteen months is the point-reduction limit. The insurance benefit is maintained on a 36-month cycle.
