  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Albany County is larger than downtown Albany. Colonie, Guilderland, and Bethlehem send cars onto I-87 and I-90, and a commute can end in Albany, Rensselaer, or Schenectady. DMV lists the internet PIRP sponsor American Safety at 111 Washington Avenue, Suite 606, in the city of Albany. That office is the sponsor’s listed address, not a classroom you must attend, and this website is not that office.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-87, the Northway. It runs north from Albany through Colonie toward Saratoga. A Northway ticket is still a New York conviction.
  • I-90. The Thruway crosses the county and connects toward Schenectady. It does not create a second insurance percentage.
  • US 20 and Route 85. These are the surface routes through Guilderland and toward the hilltowns. Posted limits on them are ordinary New York tickets.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Albany County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

A car garaged in Loudonville or Delmar uses the same principal-operator rule as a car garaged in the city. The city page covers downtown and I-787. This page is for the rest of the county, where the Thruway and the Northway do more of the daily miles.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Albany County

I live in Colonie and work in downtown Albany. Which page is mine?

Either page enrolls you in the same statewide course. Use this county page for the suburbs and the Albany city page for downtown and I-787. The 10% base-rate reduction still requires you to be the principal operator, and up to 4 points apply only to DMV’s suspension calculation.

Does Albany County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
