  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Tompkins County is Ithaca at the south end of Cayuga Lake, plus Dryden, Lansing, and the hills around Cornell and Ithaca College. Route 13 is the way in and out. A college town has many drivers who are not the principal operator on the household policy. That is the question to settle before enrolling.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • Route 13. The main road from Cortland through Ithaca toward Elmira. It is posted.
  • Route 79. An east–west road through Ithaca toward Whitney Point and the west hill.
  • Route 34 and Route 96. They follow the lake north toward Cayuga County. Lake-road tickets stay on the record.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Tompkins County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

The Ithaca page covers the city streets. This county page covers Dryden, Lansing, and the routes over the hills. The checkout is the same statewide link. There is no campus price on this site.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Tompkins County

Can a Cornell or Ithaca College student use this course to cut a parent’s premium?

Only if that student is the principal operator of the insured vehicle. DMV says that when more than one person on the policy finishes, only the principal operator receives the 10%. Ask the insurer.

Does Tompkins County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
