  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Rensselaer County is the east side of the Hudson opposite Albany. Troy is the city, and East Greenbush, Schodack, and Hoosick Falls are the other centers. I-90 crosses the river, and US 4 and Route 7 carry local traffic. A commute into Albany is normal. It does not split the point total in half.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

Roads that matter here

  • I-90. It crosses the county toward Massachusetts and the Thruway. It is posted.
  • US 4. The river road through Troy and the riverside towns.
  • Route 7. It runs east from Troy toward Vermont. Leaving the state does not make this a Vermont course.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Rensselaer County. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

The Dunn Memorial Bridge and the Patroon Island Bridge are daily crossings. A ticket on the Rensselaer side counts with a ticket on the Albany side. The Albany city page covers the west bank.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Rensselaer County

I live in Troy and work in Albany. Do I get two reductions?

No. One completion provides the 10% base-rate reduction for the principal operator. A second county on your commute does not add a second 10%.

Does Rensselaer County have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
