  • 10% of the base rate for 3 years
  • Up to 4 points on a suspension calculation
  • 6 hours online, finish within 30 days

Troy is the Rensselaer County city on the east bank of the Hudson. Congress Street and the bridges to Albany are daily routes. RPI and downtown share a compact grid. A bridge ticket and a hill-street ticket are both New York.

How it works

  1. 1 Enroll at checkout The button opens American Safety Institute’s checkout. This site does not change that address.
  2. 2 Finish the 6-hour course DMV says the internet course includes 320 minutes of instruction and must be finished within 30 days.
  3. 3 Certificate, then your insurer The sponsor tells DMV. You give the paper certificate to your insurer. Points stay on your record.

Statewide rule, short version: a 10% reduction for three years in the base rate of your current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums, if you are the principal operator. Up to 4 points come off DMV’s suspension math, not off the record. The full limits are on the 6-hour course page.

DMV office

The internet course does not require a trip to a DMV office. If you need an office for a permit, a license, or a driving record, search the NY DMV office finder for Troy. Hours and which transactions an office handles change, so use that live list instead of a copied address.

What stays the same

The county page covers East Greenbush and the rest of Rensselaer County. The Albany page covers the far side of the river. Enroll once if you are the principal operator and you want the New York reduction.

If you are 18 or older and still need a first New York license, that is the 5-hour pre-licensing course, not this one.

Questions for Troy

I cross from Troy to Albany every day. Do I enroll twice?

No. One New York completion covers the New York record. A second enrollment does not double the 10% and is not how you keep the benefit. DMV says you take the course once every 36 months to maintain the insurance reduction.

Does Troy have its own course price?

No. This site links to one statewide checkout for the New York 6-hour internet course. American Safety Institute publishes the fee on its course page, and the checkout page shows the amount due. The DMV point and insurance rules do not change by county or city.
